Crusoe's character, from a modern point of view, is more problematic. It is hard to appreciate his sense of domination and ownership over his land, given the legacy of that kind colonialism. Also, his paternalistic treatment of Friday as a primitive savage is difficult for a modern audience, as is Friday's naive adulation of Crusoe. A more interesting take on their relationship emerges in Tournier's post-colonial retelling of the novel, called Friday. In his book, Crusoe comes to learn wisdom from Friday and to realize there is more to life than just what Western culture offers
