Ruby Bridges was a six-year-old Black little girl when
she became famous in 1960. She lived in Louisiana.
Until then, she had to go to a black school because, during
segregation, Black and White people can not share the
same public places.
But in 1954 school segregation was
declared illegal and, from that moment, Black children
were able to join any White school.
Nevertheless, Ruby Bridges's story showed that, even
with that Supreme Court's decision, things were
difficult.
She was the only Black pupil in her class for a
whole year and she had to eat on her own at school.
For years, civil rights leaders had to continue to fight for
racial equality until the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which
became the turning point in American history for Black
Americans.
