Apartheid was declared by the government in 1948 and ended in 1989, when Frederik de Klerk became President of South Africa. Apartheid was a racist system that separated races. The different categories of those races were: Whites, Blacks, Indians and Coloured. Nelson Mandela was a leader who protested againt Apartheid. The Blacks were separated from Whites. Whites were priviliged, they had a better education than Blacks. Black people had to stop working at age 13 to work in gold mines.
