This cartoon was made by the French artist Aurel.
At the top of the picture we can see a dark cloud and it’s raining. Underneath the cloud, in the centre of the picture there is a man. He’s wearing a shirt that represents the flag of England, and shorts that displays the Union Jack. He is carrying a pint of beer in his left hand and an umbrella in his right hand. His right foot is standing above a football crushing a rooster.
This cartoon represents British people as drunk football fans. We can say that the man is drunk because he is not wearing the appropriate outfit during a rainy day and he doesn’t care about the poor rooster. The artist wants to represent British people as heavy drinkers. He added a cloud to highlight the stereotype that it’s always raining in England. The rooster represents France. By crushing the rooster with the ball, it shows that British people can be annoyed by French people.
I think we can agree that British and French people love to tease each other by using stereotypes. I think the artist is quite right about the weather in England, and we could say the same thing about Brittany. I don’t think he’s right about the outfit though, I’ve never seen English people wearing their flags. Here it is used only to show the character nationality. I think he’s right about the beer, binge drinking is a popular practice in England but they don’t drink beer only. They drink a lot of gin and whiskey as well. So I think it does not represent properly the drinking habits in England. Finally I think the artist is right about the most popular sport in England : football.
Explications :Voilà j’ai répondu à toutes les questions et j’ai parlé des stereotypes sur les Anglais.
