harles Dickens was born in
Portsmouth in 1812.

Charles Dickens read a lot;
he was a very
sensitive and
unhappy child. His family was
terribly poor and they lived in a
sordid suburb of London.
His father went to prison for
debt when he was only 12 and he
worked in a small factory.
It was a horrible experience and
he never forgot it.
Then, his father sent him to school and

very poor, but he wanted to write and he
became a reporter. He travelled a lot
(he went to the United States
in 1840) and wrote many articles.
But success came in 1836 with
The Pickwick Papers, his first book.
After that, he was rich
and famous and he never
stopped writing novels. He wrote
David Copperfield in 1849, a book
about the tragedy of his
childhood. He died in 1870.
