Charles Burton was born in 1845 to Elizabeth Blowers and Charles Barber in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. From the age of eighteen he studied at the Royal Academy of Arts and lived near Regent Park. Charles became a popular animal painter specializing particularly in sentimental portraits of dogs, often of children. His works range from actual photographic reproduction to a quick sketch.
In 1883 he was elected a fellow of the Royal Institute of Petroleum Painters, Walker Art Gallery, Manchester City Art Gallery and of the Royal Academy from 1866 to 1893. He received his final commission from Queen Victoria in 1894 and a few months later, he died.
