This subject invites us to ask ourselves whether art is indispensable to society. Couldn't society exist so well without art? On the one hand, art is valued as one of the major expressions of individual freedom. Its absence would therefore be the sign of a society crushed by a totalitarian power which requires artists to use their creations at the service of propaganda.
However, the valuation of art sometimes highlights its socially useless character. Artistic activity would not be a job like any other. It would not meet material needs but would satisfy the desire to dream, to escape, to relax. In this case, a company might consider doing without art, totally or partially, seeing it as a mere adjuvant.
The first part will highlight the arguments traditionally given to mark the value of art. The second will show that our conception of art is historically defined. A society without art, as we understand it today, is therefore not necessarily an impossibility. In the last part, we will try to show the need for art in today's society.Explications :
